Industry Engagement Session on Malaysia Standards Strategy (MSS) 2026–2035
April 30, 2026
Head Office, KL
FMM President Jacob Lee Chor Kok delivered his welcome remarks as FMM hosted the Industry Engagement Session on Malaysia Standards Strategy (MSS) 2026–2035 in collaboration with Department of Standards Malaysia and its appointed consultant, Accounting Research Institute (ARI), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), at Wisma FMM on April 30, 2026.
The session, attended by 28 industry representatives, aims to validate interim findings, identify sectoral gaps, and shape Malaysia’s standardisation agenda for the next decade. Participants were grouped into six key areas: digitalisation and smart manufacturing; sustainability, ESG and energy transition; food, halal and agrofood systems; built environment and materials; consumer products and personal care; and SMEs and cross-sector industries.
In his remarks, Mr Jacob highlighted that as a trading nation, Malaysia’s manufacturing sector depends on globally recognised standards to enhance competitiveness, enable market access, and support participation in high-value supply chains. He emphasised that standards go beyond compliance, they drive productivity, quality, safety, sustainability, and innovation, while enabling SMEs to scale and integrate into larger value chains.
He further noted that standards are critical in advancing research, development, commercialisation and innovation (RDC&I), ensuring new technologies can move from lab to market through clear validation and certification pathways. With over 4,660 Malaysian Standards across 26 sectors, the priority is to ensure these standards remain aligned with industry needs, responsive to emerging technologies, and practical for adoption.

As industries evolve particularly in areas such as AI, smart manufacturing, green technology and the circular economy, standards must keep pace, remain internationally aligned, and avoid adding unnecessary compliance burdens.
The engagement session provides a valuable platform for industry to share feedback and help define priorities across the six identified areas.
